Author Interview -- Nikki Brooke

Nikki Brooke

What genres do you write in? Include subgenres.

Young Adult science fiction and fantasy. Dystopian. Space opera. Queer/LGBTQ+. With romantic subplots

When did you start writing? What kickstarted this?

I was 8 when I first decided I wanted to write stories, which was kind of ridiculous because I didn't like reading then. But the only reason why I didn't like reading was because I read slower than all the other kids. I still read slowly, but I think that helps me be a better writer because I take in every word.

What's in your writing space? Why did you choose it?

I have a study nook which is a great space to write. It's like a cave, with a big bookcase, and enough space for my two dogs. Sometimes I like more open space for writing, and on those days I'll take my computer to the open living space or a cafe.

What is something about you that makes you different?

I'm a contradiction of myself constantly, e.g. I'm analytical but also creative; I'm friendly but an introvert; I'm bisexual, so can't decide they're either, haha; I'm a hermit homebody but also love to travel. Make it make sense haha

Got a routine? How would you describe it?

Haha, nope!

Any writing pet peeves?

I hate the surprise pregnancy trope!

Name the titles you've published. What's the most recent? Do you have a new release coming soon?

The Huxian Fox is launching July 16!! It's a sassy fast-paced young adult space opera with loads of adventure and a sapphic subplot. It has Chinese and Greek mythology and other fantasy themes too. I've released one other book called Plagued Lands which is a YA dystopian and has racked up loads of awards, which still seems surreal to me! If you want a book to break your heart, this one's it.

For your new release...What are 5 reasons someone should read this book.

The Huxian Fox

1. You can't help but smile while reading it

2. You'll feel like part of the motley spaceship crew

3. It has Greek AND Chinese mythology

4. The slow burn romance will have you burning for more, plus it's sapphic!

5. It's action filled and you won't be able to put it down

Do you have any crazy quirks? Name them.

I see colours when I think of numbers coz I have synaesthesia. The toilet paper roll needs to be the right way round. If it's not, I will change it. Even if it's not my house. I can't help myself.

What is something that makes you "normal"? Is there something others can relate to?

You can't tell I'm not 'normal' when you first meet me. I'm 'normal' passing, just like I'm 'straight' passing, haha

Your favorite book. Why is it your favorite?

Even though I can't choose a fav book, Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson holds a special place in my heart. It was the first story that made me cry.

Who is your favorite author? Did this author inspire any of your writings?

Equal favourites: C.S. Pacat, Amie Kaufman, Jay Kristoff, Sheryl Jordan, John Marsden. All of them influenced me some way. My style is probably a mix of these authors.

You are in a room filled with aspiring writers. What would you tell them before they write their first book.

You can do it!! Believe in yourself. I think this is the hardest lesson to learn for most authors. At least it was for me.

Your ideal audience. Who is she/he?

I write mainly for young adults, so teenage girls are the main market, but I've had loads of older people of all genders enjoy my books too
